Garage Door Safety Guide

What to check monthly, why springs and cables are not DIY, and how to test the safety reverse.

A garage door is the largest moving object in most homes. It can weigh hundreds of pounds and relies on high-tension springs, cables, and an opener. Safety checks are worth doing, but some repairs should always be left to a professional.

Springs and cables are not DIY

Torsion and extension springs store enormous energy. A spring that breaks or is released incorrectly can cause serious injury. Cables are also under tension and can snap.

If you see a broken spring, a frayed cable, or a door that will not lift, stop using the opener and call a professional. Do not try to wind or unwind the spring yourself.

Test the safety reverse

Place a small object, such as a roll of paper towels, in the path of the closing door. The door should reverse when it contacts the object. If it does not, the opener or adjustment needs attention.

Test the photo-eye sensors by blocking one side while the door is closing. The door should reverse. Clean the sensor lenses and check alignment.

Monthly visual check

  • Listen for grinding, squealing, or popping.
  • Look for frayed cables, loose brackets, or bent tracks.
  • Check that the door moves smoothly and stays balanced.
  • Test the remote and wall switch.
  • Make sure the emergency release works.

Lubricate metal rollers, hinges, and tracks according to the manufacturer. Do not lubricate the tracks themselves with grease that attracts dust.

When to call a professional

Call for broken springs, frayed cables, off-track doors, a door that slams or reverses randomly, or an opener that runs but does not move the door. These are not jobs for a general handyman without garage door training.

If the door is the only access to the garage and it is stuck, ask about emergency service availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

No. Springs are under high tension and can cause serious injury. Use a trained garage door technician.

Why does my door reverse immediately?

A sensor obstruction, misalignment, or a limit setting can cause this. Check the sensors first, then call if the problem continues.

How long do garage door openers last?

Many last around 10 to 15 years, depending on use and maintenance. A repair may be possible, but age and parts availability matter.
